MARION NATIVES TEAM UP TO FORM GIRLS MENTORING PROGRAM
Marion, South Carolina- July 27, 2015 – Marion natives, Laura Campbell and Adaya Sturkey, have teamed up in a great way. These two young ladies have come back to their community to spearhead a mentoring program for minority girls in Marion County and the surrounding areas. Laura Campbell is the daughter of Dr. Treadwell and Mrs. Jacqueline Campbell. She is a 2013 graduate of the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics and is currently a Junior at Howard University where she is pursuing a Bachelor's of Science in Biology. Adaya Sturkey is the daughter of Mr. Leon and Dr. Matrell Sturkey. She is a 2014 graduate of the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics and is currently a sophomore at Hampton University where she is also pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology. Both girls wish to eventually pursue dual M.D. and Ph.D degrees.
The purpose of their organization, “Flourish,” is to prepare young women to be competitive candidates in the collegiate system and United States job market. Flourish will cultivate future barrier breakers. Campbell and Sturkey are quoted saying, “We intend to expedite their progress and cultivate these girls so that they will grow and begin their journey into womanhood.” Campbell and Sturkey want to give the girls in their hometown the opportunity to be exposed to and experience mentoring that could help break the negative cycles in the area. They believe that there is a world of possibilities awaiting these girls. The goal of this organization is to not only to help these girls succeed in their current and future environments, but for them to optimize their potentials and talents. The goal is for them to flourish.
The organization will have its first official event on Thursday, August 13th, in the Marion High School Hart Center. “A Power Session and Conversation for Young Women” will be a day of enlightenment and empowerment starting at 9:00am and ending at 3:45 pm. The event is open to girls in middle school and high school. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. This session will feature panels with current college students discussing topics such as college life and relationships as well as professionals talking about the importance of networking and business professionalism.
